A 27-year-old Maldivian student who was training to become a pilot in Spain sustained serious injuries when the flight he was on crashed.

According to the Spanish newspaper La Rioja, the Maldivian student suffered injuries to his head, ankle, and leg bones. The 26-year-old flight instructor who was with him also sustained serious injuries to his head and neck vertebrae.

The plane crashed in an agricultural area called “Ulagosa” near Viana, from a height of approximately 300 feet. The aircraft was a twin-engine Tecnam P2006 belonging to the “Flyby” pilot school, which had been carrying out “touch and go” training exercises at Agoncillo Airport. On board were an instructor with more than 700 flying hours and a student in the final stage of training, according to the newspaper.

However, while La Rioja reported that the injured trainee was Maldivian, two other newspapers reported that he was Pakistani. Attempts to obtain a comment from the Maldivian Foreign Ministry regarding the incident have so far been unsuccessful. Spain’s Civil Aviation Safety Agency has launched an investigation into the crash.
