Shahid announces MDP presidential primary bid, resigns presidency

MDP President Abdulla Shahid officially announced tonight that he will contest the party’s presidential primary to run in the 2028 presidential election.

Before making the announcement at a rally held in Addu tonight, Shahid also resigned from his position as President of the MDP. Shahid said that he does not believe it is fair to contest an internal election while holding the party’s most senior position.

Announcing his candidacy in the presidential primary, Shahid said that he would govern as a servant of the people and would deliver a simple administration. He also said that he would prioritize the welfare and interests of the nation.

In addition to Shahid, the party’s former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has also officially announced that he will contest the MDP primary. Although former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also decided to contest the primary, he has not yet officially announced it.
