The United States has expressed its desire to expand cooperation with the Maldives in the field of maritime security and safety.

In a statement issued to mark the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended greetings to the Maldivian people and highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries. He noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Washington and Malé.

Rubio said that, building on the relationship developed over these six decades, the United States is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Maldives in key areas going forward. He placed particular emphasis on maritime security and safety, describing it as an area where the US hopes to broaden its partnership with the island nation.

The Secretary of State also acknowledged the role played by the Maldives in maintaining the Indian Ocean as a peaceful and stable region. “We look forward to further strengthening our partnership on important maritime security issues and in sustaining stability in the Indian Ocean region,” Rubio said in his statement.

Extending best wishes on behalf of the American people, Rubio wished the Maldivian people continued success and prosperity, and expressed hope that the ties between the two nations would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
