The Maldivian government has strongly condemned the missile attacks carried out by the Houthi group operating in Yemen against Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued today, the Maldivian government said these were blatant attacks aimed at violating Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also described them as a dangerous threat to the security and stability of the entire region. It further affirmed that the Maldivian government stands firmly with Saudi Arabia and its people, and supports all measures taken by Saudi Arabia to protect its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
The Houthis launched these attacks after ending a four-year truce, accusing Saudi Arabia of assisting airstrikes on an airport under their control. Saudi Arabia said its defense systems intercepted the missiles fired at its southern regions. The spokesperson of the Saudi-led coalition described those who launched the missiles as “terrorist Houthis.”
The Houthis’ military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said the strike on Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia was carried out in response to the “major aggression” against Sana’a International Airport. Announcing the end of their period of restraint, the Houthis warned airlines against using Saudi airspace until the “siege” on Sana’a airport is lifted.
