Government opens applications for new major housing scheme

The Ministry of Housing has opened the opportunity to apply for the first housing scheme conducted under the government’s “Housing for All” policy. While the opportunity to apply for land plots under this scheme is open until March 4th, the deadline for submitting applications for flats is April 17th. Applications for these schemes are to be submitted online via the “Hiyaavehi Portal.”

In this scheme, a total of 15,000 land plots have been arranged for distribution, including areas in the Greater Male’ Region and RasMale’. This includes 10,000 plots for residents of Male’, 3,000 plots for people from other islands living in Male’, and 500 plots for those without support/guardians. Additionally, 1,500 plots have been reserved for those exchanging land from narrow lanes in Male’ and for those consolidating land. Furthermore, out of the 7,900 flats arranged for distribution in the Male’ area, 4,000 flats are designated for Male’ residents, 1,500 flats for people from other islands living in Male’, and 2,400 flats for special priority categories.

The most notable feature of this scheme is the newly introduced categories. Specifically, special categories have been included this time for taxi drivers and those working in the fishing and tourism industries. Additionally, an opportunity has been opened for those who received 1 or 2-room flats in previous schemes to upgrade to 3-room flats based on the number of children they have. The Ministry of Housing advises everyone to submit their form under the single category that best fits their situation.

Criteria for applying to this scheme include having resided in Male’ for 15 years. This period will be calculated up to January 14, 2026. Since proving the duration of residence in Male’ has been difficult for many in the past, an opportunity has been given to submit documents explaining any gaps in residence due to special circumstances. Furthermore, in awarding points, special priority will be given to the individual’s income and living conditions. Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, has stated that after evaluating the forms and determining eligible recipients, the handover of plots and flats will begin within this term.
