The opposition MDP has stated that the government must clarify to the public what is happening within STELCO following the dismissal of Managing Director Ahmed Shamah Rasheed and the suspension of the Head of the Procurement Department, Azhad Rameez.
The party’s Interim Chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo), stated that with the leak of an audio clip allegedly containing a confession to corruption, the government must verify its authenticity and be held accountable.
Shamah has denied the audio, claiming it is a fabrication created by others to frame him. However, Gapo noted that at a time when public complaints regarding high electricity bills are at a peak, it is the government’s responsibility to reveal the truth behind the corruption allegations and the reasons for the dismissal of the company’s leaders.
Although the Privatization Board has not disclosed the specific reason for Shamah’s dismissal, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has confirmed that it is investigating a corruption case related to him.
