The People’s Majlis today approved the appointment of former Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela as the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). Her appointment was approved with the consensus of 38 members in a vote held during a session convened outside the regular parliamentary term.
After Rameela’s name was sent to the Majlis Human Rights and Gender Committee for review, the committee yesterday decided that she was suitable for appointment as HRCM President. Rameela, who currently holds the position of HRCM member, was appointed to that position last month with parliamentary approval.
Currently, opposition MDP members have boycotted today’s session, citing issues related to sessions being held outside the regular parliamentary term.
