President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the path the Maldives has chosen to move forward – without taking sides in major international issues and without leaning towards any particular power – is the model demonstrated by Britain.
In an article President Muizzu wrote for the British conservative newspaper “The Telegraph,” he said that Britain is the strongest example of not taking sides in foreign policy. Praising the model Britain demonstrates in balancing between America and Europe, the President said that this is also the path the Maldives has chosen.
Referring to the China-Sinamalé Bridge and highway built in Malé with Chinese assistance, and the Greater Malé Connectivity Project being developed with Indian aid, the President said that although these are projects by the two most competitive major powers of the 21st century, they are tools for developing a high-tech Maldives for Maldivians.
The President said that China is a reliable development partner, India is the closest friend, and Britain is a natural partner. He stated that even while dealing with these major powers, the Maldives will have the freedom to operate without taking sides in major international issues.
Noting the expanding economic ties between the Maldives and Britain, the President said that beyond tourism, there are very significant opportunities for British businesses to participate in areas such as the digital economy, creative industries, renewable energy, and fisheries in the Maldives.
