Nasheed criticizes mayor for allowing government to cut trees

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it is unacceptable for Malé City Mayor Adam Azim to resign from his position, claiming that trees in Malé are being cut down by the government, and to allow the government to do things as it pleases.

Nasheed said this in a post on X at a time when many people are expressing concern on social media following the commencement of cutting trees in the Bazaar Mathi area in connection with the construction of the northern harbor in Malé. It is understood that trees in the area are being cut as part of the second phase of developing Boduthakurufaanu Magu, which involves modernizing a 250-meter stretch from the Local Market to North Harbor to contemporary standards.

Additionally, criticism has been directed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to cut down two old banyan trees as requested by some people at a public meeting held in Vilimalé late last month. This decision was made by taking a show of hands vote among those who attended the meeting.
