Malé fish market corruption audit complete, says Mayor

Mayor of Male City Council Adam Azim stated last night that the audit report on the matter involving two agreements worth millions of dollars for the Male Fish Market development project has been completed. He said the report has also been shared with City Council members.

Speaking at a campaign rally for the MDP ticket in the upcoming Local Council elections, the Mayor said the fish market agreement issue has been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission and the police as well. He stated that no one can get away with matters involving public property and money. Such individuals must receive appropriate punishment, he said.

The issue of two contracts related to the fish market surfaced last August, and the Mayor brought the matter to a City Council meeting held at that time. According to the Mayor, the second contract was made during the period when the mayoral position was vacant, after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned as Mayor to assume the presidency. He said it was an agreement made with a company called FJ Design, contrary to the decision of the Bid Committee.

However, the Mayor said progress on the matter is being delayed due to state institutions. He noted that he has personally visited some institutions to request they expedite the resolution of the case. The Mayor said the matter has also been sent to the Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee requesting urgent action, but there has been no response.
