H. Hajarage Luthufee, the mastermind behind the 1988 attack in the Maldives, has been released completely.
Luthufee was the mastermind of the brutal attack on the Maldives on November 3, 1988, when militants of a Sri Lankan terror group called the People’s Liberation of Tamil Eelam (PLOT) stormed the capital.
Luthufee was convicted in the case. However, then-President Maumoon commuted the sentence of the convicts sentenced to death in connection with the November 3 attacks and commuted them to life imprisonment.
However, Luthfee managed to escape after being sent abroad for medical treatment. It was in 2010 under former president Mohamed Nasheed.
He went to the Maldives Embassy in Sri Lanka on May 01, 2019, nine years after he was on the run. When Luthufee went to the Sri Lankan embassy, he was protected by the embassy and kept in an apartment there and kept under wraps by the government.
However, when the media was abuzz with the rumours, the government finally agreed that Luthufee was in the custody of the government.
