Democrats now say Nasheed’s case can proceed only if the court decides

The Democrats party  has said that the non-confidence motion filed by MDP to remove Speaker Mohamed Nasheed from the parliament can only be taken up further if the Supreme Court decides on the constitutional case filed by the MDP in the Supreme Court.

In a letter addressed to parliament’s Council General, The Democrats leader Ali Azim said that while MDP had filed a case in the Supreme Court, the parliament’s debate and decision on the same issue would influence the matter.

Therefore, we do not think that the matter can be taken up again in the Parliament of Rathun unless the Supreme Court decides on the case which has now been accepted by the Supreme Court.

Ali Azim said in his letter.

Since MDP’s case is in the Supreme Court, i don’t think the matter can be on the agenda until a decision is taken on the matter as it is considered an attempt by the parliament to debate and decide on the same issue.

Regarding the no-confidence motion moved by the Parliament, Ali Azim said in thr letter Address to The People’s Majlis.

The no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has already been scheduled for Sunday. Since Sunday this week, nasheed’s no-confidence motion has been on the agenda . However, since then, the matter could not be taken up as Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla is on leave.

Eva has been on leave for suffering from dengue. Eva also shared medical certificates and blood reports with parliament, informing she is not well for attending parliament sessions.

As per the rules of the House, a no-confidence motion has to be chaired by the Deputy Speaker. The rules of the House do not specify what to do in the absence of a Deputy Speaker.
