Discontinuing President Yameen’s trials is the worst injustice: Shiyam

PPM Vice President Ahmed Shiyam has said that the current government is torturing President Yameen in a continuous manner and that the biggest injustice meted out to him is to prolong his trials.

President Solih transferred President Yameen to his home after Muizzu won the election. Since then President Yameen has been placed under house arrest. With the decision to relax President Yameen’s detention rule, Shiyam said that it is becoming more clear to all maldivians that President Yameen is indeed innocent. Noting that the atrocities being meted out to President Yameen are unabated, Shiyam said that the current government has stopped hindered his trial and tortured him.

This could have been done long ago. Bail, too, was presided in the courts earlier. When it becomes President Yameen they have no idea about these things. It’s not even a “rashu bandhu” (detention in town). A small relief for his medical purposes. Otherwise, even “rashu bandhu” is an injustice that the law does not recognose. President Yameen is an innocent man. The fact that his trials have been hindered is the biggest injustice. We demand the release of President Yameen.

— Shyam said.

It is still unclear when the High Court will conclude the appeal process against Yameen’s jail term. Yameen’s lawyers have expressed concern over the delay in the case, alleging that it was a conspiracy by a group of people in connivance with the PG.

President-elect Muizzu has repeatedly said that president Yameen will be released on legal grounds.
