In the press release, the opposition has called and urged all political parties, civil societies and the Maldivian public to raise their concern and appeal to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Seas to delay passing on the judgement of Maldives Chagos boundary dispute.

PPM stated that this is to allow the Maldivian people to truly present their sentiments at the tribunal on this sensitive matter.

PPM also expressed Progressive Congress coalition’s unequivocal condemnation on the recent decision made by the Maldivian government to retract its stance on the dispute surrounding the maritime boundary of the exclusive economic zone of the republic of Maldives and the Chagos islands claimed by the Republic Mauritius.

The opposition mentioned that the decision made by  President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to withdraw any claims over the historic Exclusive Economic Zone of Maldives without consulting  the wider public is a matter of serious concern which can have long lasting socioeconomic impact on the Republic of Maldives.

PPM also noted that this decision is also in direct violation of the Constitution of Maldives, which mandates the President to ensure the territorial integrity of the Republic of Maldives.

This deplorable decision by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is set to cause irreparable damage on the economy of Maldives and future generation.
