MDP Presidential ticket officially handed over to President Solih

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who won the presidential primary elections with a landslide victory against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) party president Mohamed Nasheed, has been handed over the presidential ticket of 2023 Presidential election.

The Presidential ticket was handed over by the party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, at a rally held at Kaaniva area last night.

President Solih received around 61 per cent of the total votes cast, from MDP primary held on 28th last month. As per the final results announce earlier this month, Nasheed received 15,641 votes, which amounts to 38.90 percent of the total vote. President Solih received 24,566 votes.

As the Presidential ticket was handed over to the president, civil suit seeking the annulment of the primary was also filed by Nasheed loyalists. The court is yet to decide on eligibility of the case.

At the same time Nasheed is also currently trying to revitalize his political movement inside the party, in the name of “Revival of Thought”, to which his supporter are giving their endorsements by means of signing-up for the movement.

The Elections Commission (EC) earlier announced that this year’s Presidential Election will be held on September 9, 2023.

In case of a second round in the presidential election, runoff voting will be held on 30th September, 21 days after the first round, as stipulated by the law. Applications will be opened for candidates to file their candidatures 3rd July onwards.
