Government’s hasty decision to start a bus service in Villimale is a waste of public funds: Mayot Muizzu

Following the rushed announcement by the government that they would start a bus service in Villimale’ immediately after the revelation by the Male’ City Council that they were planning to launch an electric buggy service on the island, is nothing but wasting public funds, said the Mayor of Male’ City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Speaking at the 85th sitting of the Male’ City Council, the Mayor said that the central government has no grasp of decentralised administration.

We consulted the people of Villimale’, make necessary plans based on extensive research, before ordering the new buggies. The hasty announcement of a new bus service by the government is nothing short of a waste of public funds and further indication that they simply cannot stomach local governance. Everything is politics to them. It shows just how small they are.

stated Mayro, Dr. Muizzu.

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also revealed that the Ministry of Transport has given the City Council the necessary approval for the new electric buggy service, back on 25th September 2022.

We asked the CEO of MTCC about this surprise announcement, and it became very clear that he was doing this on sudden orders from higher authorities”, he added. “If the government is hell-bent on hijacking and jeopardising everything we do, what good is it to have a decentralised system of governance and elaborate laws to safeguard the system.

he went on to note.

At today’s sitting, the Deputy Mayor and numerous Councillors also spoke on the matter. They expressed their disgust over the government’s disruptive actions and urged authorities to work with responsibly.
