Democrats to intervene in MDP’s Supreme Court case over Nasheed no-confidence motion

The Supreme Court has rejected request from individual member of Democrats Party to intervene in the petition submitted by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the Supreme Court.

The first hearing of MDP’s petition in the Supreme Court will be held at 10 am tomorrow. Following the court’s decision not to allow individual Members of the Democrats to participate in the case filed in the Supreme Court, a council meeting of the Democrats was convened and the party approved directly to intervene in the case.

With this decision, it is learnt that the party secretariat is in the process of sending a letter to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has decided to allow PPM/PNC to intervene in the case filed in the court.

The Parliament session, which was scheduled to proceed with Nasheed’s removal, was cancelled last week after Deputy Speaker Eva sent a letter saying that she was not doing well.

As per the rules of the Majlis, a no-confidence motion has to be chaired by the Deputy Speaker. The rules of the Majlis do not specify what to do in the absence of a Deputy Speaker. Therefore, in the case filed in the Supreme Court, it has been stated that in cases where the Deputy Speaker is unable to attend the sitting of the no-confidence motion, it should be interpreted as to be applicable to Rule 44 of the House.

In its petition to the supreme court, the MDP has also sought an explanation that no other business of the House can be carried out unless a decision is taken on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker. MDP lawmakers have alleged that Eva is not attending the meetings without giving a reason to prolong Nasheed’s removal.

MDP has said that no othet business can be carried out in the parliament without a decision is taken on Nasheed’s removal as per the rules of the House.

Although a supplementary budget has been sent to the parliament to meet the expenses for the next fiscal year and the rest of the year, the process of tabling the budget could not begin as the issue of Nasheed’s removal has been stalled.
