The Election Commission (EC) on Monday said there will be no by-election to Faresmathoda Constituency.
The opposition alliance candidate, who won the recently concluded elections, Mohamed Muizzu’s running mate is Faresmathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef. Hussain will be sworn in as vice-president next month.
With this, the Fares Mathoda seat will fall vacant. Vice President of the Election Commission Ismail Habeeb said the constitution stipulates that a member of parliament should be elected within five-and-a-half days from the date of the vacancy to the seat falling vacant due to his disqualification.
However, if there is a period of six months or less between the date of vacancy and the upcoming general election to parliament, then a member should not be elected to that vacant seat.
Hence, there will be no by-election to Faresmathoda Constituency. There is also the possibility that some lawmakers belonging to PPM/PNC in the parliament may become members of the cabinet. If that is the case, then elections to these constituents will also not be held.
