Henveiru West MP and currently democratic interim chairperson Hassan Latheef has been elected as the party’s president after winning the first internal election of The Democrats held yesterday.
The results came amid criticism for not declaring the provisional results even after 24 hours of voting.
Hassan Latheef won the election by a margin of 1,704 votes, according to provisional results released by the Democrats. His rival, Hussain Amr, who was managing director of STO in the last government, got 1,300 votes. A total of 50 votes were invalid in the vote to elect the party president.
Voting for the Democrats’ internal elections took place between 10 a.m. and 16 p.m. yesterday.
A total of 5,883 voters are eligible to vote in the Democrats’ internal elections. Democrats said a total of 1,043 posts were chosen in the party, of which 271 were elected.
It is believed that Former President Mohamed Nasheed supported interim chairperson Hassan Latheef, who was elected as president of the Democrats.
