Mayoral election to be held on January 13

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to hold the Mayoral election for the vacant Male’ City Council on January 13, 2020.

The post of Mayor of Male’ City is lying vacant with incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned from his post after being elected president. During his tenure as Mayor of Male’ City, President Muizzu has worked extensively for the development and development of Male’ City.

Speaking to state media last night, Vice President of the Election Commission Ismail Habib said that the election to elect the Mayor of Male’ City will be held on January 13. Habib said those who want to contest the elections will be able to do so between November 28 and December 13.

A total of four seats, including the Mayor’s seat in Male’ City council, are vacant. South Maafannu MP Nasir, Central Henveiru MP Adam Rameez and Henveiru South MP Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem have also resigned from their posts. They are currently holding key positions in the Government.

Some people have already expressed interest in contesting for the Mayoral seat in Male’ City. Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, former Minister of Youth Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof, former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed and Mohamed Saif Fatih from The Democrats will contest.

Permanent results will be declared within two days after the elections are held on January 13. The results will be declared on January 15.
