President Solih appointed as interim president of MDP

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been appointed as the president of the main opposition party MDP.

He was appointed as the acting president of the party at the party’s National Majlis meeting held in Ukulhas last night.

The post of MDP president fell vacant after former president Mohamed Nasheed stepped down from the post. The party’s National Majlis meeting held last night also decided to appoint Ministers from the previous government as members of the party’s National Majlis.

Apart from this, the party’s National Majlis has also taken some other decisions. Here are some of the conclusions:

– MDP demands a public inquiry into the so called “presence of thousands of Indian soldiers in the Maldives and their plans to take away the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, the sale of the country’s territorial waters, and the alleged corruption involving the state”.

– Form a committee to hold the government accountable

– A five-member committee should be formed to oversee the conduct of parliamentary elections

– Adding members to the party (party membership drive)

– MDP remains committed to pushing for democratic governance and preventing atrocities.
