Nasheed resigns as Speaker of Parliament

President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned from the post of Speaker of the Parliament.

When Nasheed resigned as the Speaker of the Parliament, the no-confidence motion against him began at 16:00 hrs today.

Addu Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef (Mawota Shareef) presided over the meeting. However, Naheed’s resignation letter was also read out at the meeting. In his resignation letter, the Speaker said, “MDP has committed acts prejudicial to the democracy of the country.

Stating that the Supreme Court’s action and words on the matter did not meet, Nasheed said that if he continues as speaker again, the damage caused to parliament by the majority party will increase.

I sincerely hope that the members of parliament will continue to serve in the interests of the citizens to uphold the principles of democracy. I am proud of the opportunity to serve as the Speaker of the Parliament. I hope that my resignation will help restore harmony and integrity in Maldives democratic system.
