Eva reluctant to preside before court decides

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva has said that she is reluctant to preside over the parliament meetings before deciding on MDP’s petition to the Supreme Court, as the case for the removal of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed could not proceed.

In a letter to Council General Fathimath Niusha, Eva expressed her desire not to sit in the Chair to take up the matter in the house before the Supreme Court takes a decision on the issue of removal of the speaker. Eva said that she believes that parliament’s decision to proceed with a particular decision before the Supreme Court decides on the matter is not the way parliament has been doing in the light of the rules it has already followed.

Eva said the Constitution has mandated the state agencies and all those in charge of state affairs to assist the courts in protecting the independence of the courts and ensuring that they function efficiently without being biased.

I think that parliament’s choice of a particular course of action will be an influence on the case being heard in the Supreme Court.

– Eva said in her letter.

Eva also said that after filing a case in the court seeking a specific decision, as long as the court does not make a decision, the person who went to the court, regardless of what the court is going to do, should not try to act in the parliament, to undermine the authority of the court.
