Modi invited to attend Muizzu’s swearing-in ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend Maldives President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s swearing-in ceremony.

Spokesperson at the President-elect’s Office, Firzul Mohamed, confirmed that an invitation has been sent to Modi to attend Muizzu’s swearing-in ceremony. He told some local medias media that Prime Minister Modi was invited as it has been decided to send invitations to all neighbouring countries for the event.

The Indian Prime Minister also visited the Maldives for the swearing-in ceremony of President Solih in 1018. It is common for presidents of neighbouring countries to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new president at the start of a new presidential term.

However, Modi’s presence at Muizzu’s swearing-in ceremony was viewed by many with a special perspective as many, after Dr. Muizzu’s election victory, has raised questions about how India-Maldives relations will be shaped. In this regard, it has long been described by some as a possible deterioration in India-Maldives relations under Muizzu presidency.

However, Muizzu said in media interviews after winning the election that his government would be one that would have relations with all countries. Muizzu, however, said he would order indian troops in the Maldives to leave the maldives once he takes office.
