Pre-trial detention must end, it’s inhuman: Yameen

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that pre-trial detention should come to an end and it is an inhuman act.

Speaking to party supporters after a long time, President Yameen said that his time in prison was difficult and that no other politician could bear the hardships he had endured. President Yameen said that every politician who had been jailed in the past had gone abroad without staying in prison, even for “two days”.

Yameen said that it was very frustrating to be in pre-trial detention, and it needed to be reformed. He argued that the PG was not doing the right thing in this regard and that the jail term should end until the end of the trial. It is an inhuman act and one does not have the power to conduct legal proceedings for himself.  It is in the hands of those in charge of the trial, and if the case is not proved later, then there is no justice for a person who has been in custody for several years till the end of the trial.

President Yameen has said that such things will be corrected with a majority in parliament.

This is what happens in the Maldives, and the PG wants to detain until the end of the trial. It has to be ended. Therefore, the parliament demanded a large majority for PPM/PNC. to correct such shortcomings.

– President Yameen said.

President Yameen said that if PPM/PNC gets a majority in the parliament, he will do things for the benefit of the people.
