Deputy Speaker Eva has requested a leave from Parliament sessions, while the no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been placed on the agenda for today’s session.
According to credible sources, Eva, in a letter to the parliament, had claimed that she had been diagnosed with Dengue fever.
The agenda for today’s session was a resolution to remove the Speaker from the Chair and a vote on the day’s proceedings.
A second petition was filed in parliament last month to pass the no-confidence motion signed by 49 lawmakers. The notice was sent to members on May 12. On May 18, the General Committee of the Parliament had approved a 30-minute time slot for Nasheed to respond to the case.
However, the rules of the House state that after the expiry of the 14-day notice for the no-confidence motion, the session has to be held on a next official holiday.
MDP has alleged that Eva did not intend attending today’s meeting to delay Nasheed’s no-confidence motion. As per rules, when a no-confidence motion is moved against the Speaker and if the matter goes ahead, the Vice President will preside over it.
Earlier, MDP moved a no-confidence motion against the Speaker coupled with the Vice-President. However, ahead of the second round of the presidential elections, MDP withdrew the case citing confidence.
This time, a no-confidence motion was moved against only Nasheed. The complaint was signed by 49 members. MDP has said that it will not accept the authenticity of Dr. Muizzu’s Oath if he is sworn in in presence of Nasheed being a speaker without confidence.
