The High Court of Maldives has scheduled the hearing of the appeal filed on behalf of former president Yameen for Sunday.
On December 25, 2022, he had challenged the 11-year jail term awarded to him by a trial court, but the hearings in the case were prolonged.
Though he was declared the party’s Presidential Candidate for the 2023 elections and given the party ticket, he could not contest the elections due to delay in filing the appeal.
The case is currently in the process of being debated over the objections raised by both the parties in the case, which was found guilty of money laundering by the criminal court.
So far, president Yameen’s side has pointed out that the decision to close the branch of the bank where an account was opened in his name and transferring the money to another bank does not amount to misappropriation of the original amount of money.
However, the state has repeatedly argued that the exchange of funds between two of his own accounts was an attempt to manipulate the source of the money.
He was transferred from maafushi prison to home, after opposition candidate Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who contested with his support in the presidential election, won the election.
