The Democrats on Thursday opened nominations for its presidential primary, with two days given to file candidacy for the internal election slated for July 28.

Following the announcement, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb is announced that he will contest the primary.

According to a notification issued on twitter, candidates should submit their nominations by 4pm on Saturday through the party headquarters at H. Maizandhoshuge or via email.

According to the timeline announced by the Democrats:

  • Filing of complaints on the list of eligible voters will also close at 4pm on Saturday
  • The list of candidates will be released on Sunday at 4pm
  • Polling will be held from 2-6pm on Friday, July 28

Ilyas is the only candidate who has so far announced their candidacy.

Parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who led the founding of Democrats, has ruled himself out of the party’s presidential primary.

Meanwhile, Nasheed, Gasim and Nazim on Wednesday agreed to field a common candidate in consultation with PPM and MRM. However, they said that if PPM and MRM did not agree to it, the three parties would contest on their own.
