Maldives has officially re-opened its Embassy in Washington DC. On 15 June 2023, the Embassy was officially opened by the Foreign Minister Abdhulla Shahid, who also hosted an Official Reception to mark the occasion.
During the opening ceremony Foreign Minister Shahid highlighted that the presence of Maldives Chief Justice Uz. Ahmed Muthasim as a happy coincidence that enhanced the occasion. He thanked Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim and delegation for gracing the official reception celebrating the re-opening of the Embassy.
The Chief Justice and his delegation is on a study tour organised by the United States Justice Department.
U.S. diplomatic dealings with the Maldives were previously handled through the U.S. embassy in Sri Lanka, while the Maldives is represented in the United States via its mission to the United Nations.
A Maldivian embassy was previously established in the US briefly in 2007 during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration. The embassy however, had to close down in 2008 by Gayoom’s presidential successor Mohamed Nasheed due to budgetary constraints.
The Maldives government and the US established diplomatic bilateral ties in 1966.
