Loyalists of  the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed has filed for their new political party registration at the Elections Commission, today.

The defect group of MDP today the registration of ‘The Democrats’ part at the EC, under the name Henveiru Central MP Hassan Latheef. Other breakaway MPs and several hardcore Nasheed supporters were also present at the event for submission of the form to EC.

Following submission of the registration form, MP Hassan Latheef reiterated their commitment to field a presidential candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

It is speculated that President Nasheed, who still remains in MDP, will lead the new party in the September Presidential election.
