The Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to field its candidate in September’s presidential election. The decision was made by the party council meeting held today at the JP headquarter, Kunooz. Only, Minister to President’s Office Ahmed Sameer did not vote in favour.
While leadr Qasim Ibrahim being the most likely presidential candidate of JP, the party will be opening applications for the party ticket.
Earlier JP council granted its leader Gasim Ibrahim the power and authority to decide on fielding a candidate for the upcoming presidential election and to negotiate coalition deals.
Apart from the MDP and the PPM-PNC combine, the infant Maldives National Party (MNP) has named party founder and former defence minister, Col Mohamed Nazim (retd), as its presidential candidate. Former home minister Umar Naseer has indicated his intention to contest as an independent, to ‘take Maldives in a new direction’, but he is yet to activate his poll machinery.
Out of the three elections held since 2008, Gasim contested the presidential election other than 2028. However, Qasim has failed so far to win any of the presidential election.
